photos of an accident
Is this a sensible thing to do?
Should I take photos at the scene of an accident?

It seems like a sensible thing to do, keep a camera in the car, ‘just in case’.  Unfortunately, despite good intentions, I have never quite got round to putting one in my car.
Insurance companies are now suggesting that we do it as it can help people to provide vital evidence.  More and more people are taking heed and including a camera alongside the car documentation, fluorescent jackets and red triangles.  Nowadays, most mobile phones have cameras installed, so it is very convenient to whip out your phone and start ‘framing’ your opponent.  But is this such a good idea?  Perhaps in the long run, I am actually doing myself a favour by not being so ‘prepared’.
For anyone who has been involved in a motoring incident, you never quite know how the other driver is going to react and to jump out and start ‘flashing’ in their face might antagonise an otherwise amicable situation.  Even worse, you cannot take the other driver’s mental state for granted.  They could be under the influence of drugs or be drunk.  The more you consider it, the more you start to realise just how vulnerable you actually are.  I don’t need to spell it out but pulling out an innocent weapon such as a camera could, in the worst case scenario, result in the other driver pulling out something a lot more dangerous.
So, before you smugly prepare for every possible road incident eventuality, think about whether you could deal with the consequences of carrying a camera.
