Have you insured your dog? |

“I must do the Pet Insurance”
“Mum, please can we have a dog?” My kids finally wore me down and I conceded to the dog. That was almost 3 years ago and I must admit we wouldn’t be without her now. She’s well and truly part of the family and probably spoilt more than the kids!!
Like most pets, she’s had a few problems and we’ve had a few trips to the vets -luckily for us, nothing serious and we have never had to face a huge vet bill. Even so, I kept thinking that I must take out some pet insurance for her. You know what it’s like – you remember at 3 o’clock in the morning that you need to do it but by the morning, day to day life takes over and you forget all about it for another month!!
I wasn’t deliberately putting it off, just kept forgetting to dig out her microchip number which I needed to do the insurance.
Anyway, a couple of weeks ago my daughter took the dog out for a walk and returned in a panic. She had caught the dogs “behind” in the gate and it was bleeding profusely. My husband and daughter rushed the dog to the vets (fortunately, the surgery was open) while I stayed at home pacing the floor, contemplating a huge vet bill and cursing myself for not getting my act together and getting her insured.
The vet’s diagnosis was that it was not my daughter’s fault at all. The problem was some blocked glands that had burst! (I won’t go into detail but apparently, it’s quite common in dogs!) The vet had to operate but fortunately, she was allowed home the same day.
The bill came to €150 which to be honest was very reasonable for the treatment she had. However, it was still €150 we didn’t really have that month (bad month - lots of bills!!) Had I taken out the insurance, we would have been able to claim for at least half of that amount. I don’t know what we would have done if it had been a lot more – we would have found the money somehow but at what cost?!!
Needless to say, first thing Monday morning I did her pet policy!! You’d think I’d know better working for an Hamilton Insurance. Still, at least I can now rest assured – the dog’s insured!!
